Shed Conversion to 1-Bedroom Cottage – Erwin, TN

At McConnell’s Construction Service, we recently completed a unique transformation project where an existing shed structure was converted into a fully functional 1-bedroom cottage. The exterior siding had already been completed by a previous contractor before we took over the project. From there, our team completed the interior build-out and finished the remaining exterior elements, including the porch, to bring the structure to full completion.

What was once an unfinished shell is now a livable, efficient, and thoughtfully designed small home.

Project Overview

The goal of this project was to take an existing shed structure and transform it into a complete 1-bedroom cottage. While the exterior siding was already in place when we began, the interior required full construction along with final exterior finishing to complete the space.

The focus was on creating a functional layout that included a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and living area—all within a compact footprint designed for efficient living.

Scope of Work

Our team was responsible for completing the interior construction and finishing work, along with exterior completion of the porch area, including:

  • Interior framing to define functional living spaces
  • Insulation and wall preparation for full interior finish
  • Drywall (sheetrock) installation and finishing
  • Interior painting throughout the cottage
  • Flooring installation for durability and clean finish
  • Kitchen installation including cabinets and countertops
  • Bathroom installation including shower, vanity, and toilet
  • Electrical and lighting improvements for residential use
  • Construction and completion of the exterior porch area
  • Final interior and exterior finishing details

The existing exterior siding was completed prior to our involvement in the project.

Design Approach

Because the structure began as a shed conversion, efficient use of space was essential. Every area was carefully designed to serve a purpose while maintaining a comfortable and open feel.

We focused on:

  • Maximizing usable square footage
  • Keeping a clean, modern interior design
  • Using light colors to enhance brightness
  • Creating functional storage and layout flow
  • Ensuring durability in all finishes for long-term use

The result is a compact but fully functional 1-bedroom cottage that feels open and livable.

The Transformation

This project represents a full conversion from a basic shed structure into a complete 1-bedroom cottage.

With the interior fully built out and the exterior porch completed, the space now includes a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living area—all designed for efficient, modern living.

What was once an unfinished structure is now a fully usable residential space.
